Illustration by Morgan Dennis (1892-1960), American author and illustrator noted foremost for his books about dogs. The drawing below is the chihuahua from Dennis's book Pure Breds (1954). The drawing above is from a collectioin of the Boston Artist's sketches and verse, The Morgan Dennis Dog Book (with some Special Cats) (1946). Text for his poem "The Chihuahua Speaks" runs:

"I'm Mexican, which guarantees
I like Good Neighbor policies
And if you'd care to lend your aid
To help advance this fine crusade,
Adopt me, that we may exchange
Ideas and come in closer range
Of understanding that's complete,
As company I'm hard to beat!"
