Previous Next Marilyn and Choochoo

Marilyn Monroe had a chihuahua named Josepha but whom she usually addressed as Choochoo, more or less after the song "Chatanooga Choo Choo."

"Dogs never bite me. Just humans," Marilyn once said, and throughout her life she always had one or another dog. The dog she had when she died was Maf (short for Mafia, because it was a gift from Frank Sinatra, though Marilyn said only that the word meant "My Daughter"). This was a small poodle and it was taken in by Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow after Marilyn's suicide.

The four photos below show Marilyn with some of her dogs other than the chihuahua. Clockwise, the first photo is of Maf. The second photo is of Hugo the basset she shared with Arthur Miller. Third, pulling Marilyn on skis (but on a sandy beach), is a spaniel named Ruffles in 1947. And last shown is Jippy, Norma Jeane's first dog ever, given to her by her foster father. Its name was Tippy, and about 1932 a neighbor shot Tippy dead for rolling in his garden.
