Previous Next Horseshoe Canyon pictograph

From Horseshoe Canyon in the Canyonlands National Park, here is one of many featureless human figures, probably ghosts of the dead, or corpses in death-shrouds. This one's with an antic guide-dog who appears to be in the process of growing a fifth leg or in some other manner transforming, the front paws becoming hands.

The myths and legends of the prehistoric people who dwelt in this canyon are unknown, but myths that might be related regard afterlife dog-guides who can transform into turtles (possibly in order to cross the blood-filled river of death) or can take on human form (in order to face afterlife judges and be punished for the sins of their human master).
