Above) In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, volunteers from all over the United States descended upon Louisiana and Mississippi to rescue dogs. Craig Hart of Mobile, Alabama, checks out a lone, seemingly stray chihuahua amidst the devestation. In guard-dog fashion, the chihuahua warns the would-be rescuer to stay away. The dog appeared to be in fine condition and had had had food and water left for it . So the SPCA volunteer doesn't try to catch this one. [Photo by Michael Mulvey]

Below) Chico is a Katrina survivor who was sent to Tennessee with a new family. Though life turned out good for him, there's still an air of sadness about him, as though he's remembering the family who was forced to leave him behind, never again to be seen.
