November portrait of
Clethra alnifolia 'Pink Spire'

Pink Spire

Right up to mid or late October the leaves of the Summersweet
show almost no sign of change, & it will still be leafy
as leaves vanish from surrounding shrubs. Summer's
white bottlebrush flowers have already turned to seeds
& linger even after leaf-fall & into winter like
brown candles. This photo is from October 2004.

Summersweet

Early in November (2003), the summersweet
begins to turn yellow. In some years it will be more of
a bright orange; the color varies greatly depending on its
experiences throughout the year.

Pink Spire

By mid November the Summersweet's green
& yellow leaves are mottled & spotty with red.
It will keep its leaves until a week or so into winter when
most of deciduous shrubs nearby are bare,
but then it is late to releaf in spring.

Read all about this native shrub on the main
Summersweet page.
